Individual melodies
To introduce the subject, here is the example of two melodies obtained from trees with two very different lives.
Example of melodies obtained for a young and an old tree
The first tree was born following a forest fire. Due to the absence of other trees above it, he could grow without restraint for most of its life. Therefore, most of the notes composing its melody are high. It is not an old tree: the melody holds 86 notes, which means that it is only 86 years old. The second tree is much older, the length of its melody being 162 notes, meaning 162 years. It looks as if it was born under the cover of taller trees, explaining a slow growth and low notes in its early life. However, judging by the melody going towards progressively higher notes, we can deduce that it benefited several times from the death of taller trees – and the resulting free space– to gain new heights.
Before the old-growth forest: The even-aged forest

- The most severe natural disturbances, such as forest fire, often result in the death of all trees in the impacted forests.
- Seeds from species adapted to such disturbances settle and germinate, soon afterward. Free from the competition, their annual growth is often higher.
- These newborn trees appear relatively at the same time; therefore, they are all around the same age. We use the term ‘’even-aged’’ to name this type of forest. This forest is not yet considered to be ‘’old-growth’’.
In this track, we can hear that all the individual melodies start in the first few seconds have mostly high notes. This shows that all the trees appeared around the same time and take advantage of the lack of competition to grow as fast as possible. It is thus an even-aged forest.
Old-growth forests
- In the old-growth forests, trees die alone or by small groups due to natural disturbances of low severity or simply due to aging.
- By dying, these old trees give room to the younger and smaller trees of the understory. Therefore, death is an intrinsic part of the dynamics of an old-growth forest.
- Cycles are built between the dying old trees and young trees taking their place. In the absence of severe disturbances, this cycle could theoretically last forever.
In these tracks, we can regularly hear flashes of higher notes. Those are in fact younger trees taking the place of one or many older trees that recently died, growing faster due to a better access to sunlight.
A stronger and occasional natural mortality: The case of the spruce budworm outbreaks.
- The spruce budworm is a species of moth that appears massively in the Canadian boreal forest every 30 years or so. Its caterpillars feed off the needles of spruce and fir trees.
- When too many caterpillars feed off tree needles in a stand for too long, the trees eventually die.
- However, spruce budworms rarely cause the death of the entire stand. They will most likely kill off weaker trees, giving more room to their more resistant or luckier congeners.

In these tracks, the spruce budworm outbreak of the 1970s and 1980s caused a very high mortality in the corresponding stands. Nevertheless, this wide space, cleared up in a very short period of time, allowed a strong growth of the surviving trees, audible by the explosive chorus of very high-pitched notes at the end of the tracks.
The case of paludification.
- The death of trees, individually or by group, is an intrinsic part of the dynamics of old-growth forests Therefore, this mortality does not cause a decline in these forests.
- The decline of an old-growth forest can be observed when the growth of trees is weakened by external factors, preventing younger trees to replace the older ones. This eventually leads to the gradual opening of the stand, until its complete disappearance after several centuries or millennia.
- In boreal forests, this process can be seen in poor drainage conditions that, when combined with extreme weather conditions, eventually turns the soil into a peat bog. This process is called “paludification”. In this environment, trees no longer find adequate conditions for their growth; the stand progressively declines. Only a forest fire, by burning the soil, can revive the forest’s dynamics.
In these tracks, forests are subjected to the effects of paludification and the general growth of trees is very weak. We can hear this by the abundance of lower pitch notes.
